The Bible Tells The Truth!

God wrote the Bible. God cannot lie. Therefore, the Bible tells the truth1

Few people want to hear the truth.  Are you one of them?

Fewer people want to know the truth.  Are you one of them?

Still fewer people strive to live out the truth as they know it.  Will you be one of them?

Truth seekers are rare, and truth doers even more rare.  In a discussion with a woman about the location and purpose of worship, Jesus said,

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24

So the Son of God makes it clear that those people who are seeking to do right in their approach and obedience to God should be painstaking in determining what “in spirit and in truth” means to and for them.  It starts with individual investigation (reading & studying the text) and results in personal conviction (reasons for & experiences of belief).  Spiritual growth is ongoing, so the believer continues to explore Scripture teaching to further develop as a disciple and worshipper.

Investigation Invited

Truth invites investigation.  God welcomes examination of Scripture, for He knows that the accuracy and consistency and right level of completeness is there.  God also encourages the sincere inquirer to use reason, rigorous testing, and personal proof as part of the evaluation criteria2. God then challenges the truth seeker to act upon what is found to be right, for otherwise it is merely an intellectual exercise which accomplishes nothing but consumes valuable time.

First comes the internal evidence.  The Bible makes a very clear statement that it is the word of God and therefore utterly trustworthy.  For example, the prophets wrote “thus says the LORD” and “the word of the LORD came unto me saying”; Jesus declared “Thy word is truth” and “scripture cannot be broken”; Paul wrote “all scripture is given by inspiration of God”3

Next comes the external evidence.  The finding and scrutiny of the Dead Sea scrolls prove that the translations we have of the Old Testament books are highly reliable.  Scholarly works such as “The New Testament Documents” provide solid evidence that the NT translations are likewise reliable4.  OT Bible prophecy made concerning the Jews (such as being universally hated, the certainty of their continued existence and their return from being scattered throughout the world to the land of Israel) have proven explicitly accurate.5  Prophecy stating that such-and-such will never happen, also has held true.6

Finally comes the personal evidence.  God says, in effect, ‘put your trust in me and see if I don’t take care of your daily needs’7, and millions of believers witness to this promise.  Those who want tangible evidence of a Creator God are told, ‘look at life around you and examine the universe above’ as proof of divine creative & sustaining power8, and people all over the world (including many scientists) have done so and believed.  God declared ‘these are my commandment and guidelines for living – do them for your good always’9, and people who have embraced His teaching (on topics such as diet, sex and wealth) find that His way is best! In striking contrast, every person, society, and nation that has abandoned God’s way reap what is sown10, and man’s recorded history of such godless, selfish choices testify to the terrible results.

Implications

God makes our choices and outcomes very clear; e.g. Moses to Israel, and Paul to the Athenians:

“See, I have set before you this day life and good, death and evil.  If you obey the command- ments of the LORD your God which I command you this day, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you this day, that you shall perish… I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you … may live (Deuteronomy 30:15-19)

“Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man.  The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:29-31)

Given the truths that God is Creator, and that He raised Jesus the Christ from the dead, whom He is sending back to judge the world, then the following world religions cannot be true:

  • Judaism, since it denies that Jesus was the Messiah promised by God
  • Islam, since it teaches that Jesus was merely a prophet, and was not resurrected
  • Hinduism, since it holds to many gods, no final judgment, and salvation outside of Jesus
  • Humanism, since it denies God’s existence, repudiates Jesus, and preaches evolution

The Bible is telling you the way to live now, in this life, and offers the hope of eternal life in the Kingdom of God, by faith & obedience in Jesus Christ11Believe! To do otherwise is to perish!12
