ADAM and Eve demonstrated a simple form of humanism when they disregarded the Divine instruction, saying in effect, “We know best”. All down the centuries, every man who has put his faith in man, rather than God, has been at heart a humanist. Hence the middle verse of the Bible expresses the truth that “it is better to trust in the LORD, than to put confidence in man” (Psalm 118:8). The Psalmist puts this truth even more tersely when he says, “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help” (Psalm 146:3).
