Climate change and Global Warming

cg 2Scientists tell us that the planet’s climate has constantly been changing over geological time and that the global average temperature today is about 15C, though geological evidence suggests it has been much higher and lower in the past.

However, they say, the current period of warming is occurring more rapidly than many past events. Scientists are concerned that the natural fluctuation, or variability, is being overtaken by a rapid human-induced warming that has serious implications for the stability of the planet’s climate.

cg 1Scientists also believe we are adding to the natural greenhouse effect with gases released from industry and agriculture (known as emissions), trapping more energy and increasing the temperature. This is commonly referred to as global warming or climate change.cg5

In December, officials from across the world gathered in Paris, France, to try to hammer out a deal to tackle global warming.

COP 21 – the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties – has seen more than 190 nations gather in Paris discussing a new global agreement on climate change, aimed at reducing cg7greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the threat of dangerous warming due to human activities.cg6

Amazingly these nations have done their utmost and have delivered a deal, hailed as an historic achievement. But can they achieve their goals in time?

asdaRecently a major supermarket warned that climate change could threaten the UK’s food supply chain.    The chief executive of Asda said it is one of the biggest issues facing his industry and that 95% of the supermarket’s fresh produce could be affected by a lack of water as temperatures rise and that almost half the food eaten in the UK is imported and problems with the supply chain could lead to increased prices.

What does the Bible say about all this? After all, if God created the earth, surely what man is doing to it by his selfish activities is God’s concern.

Consider the following statements in the Bible.

But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.   (Numbers 14:21)

For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.    (Isaiah 45:18)

The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.    (Psalms 115:16)

And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.    (Revelation 11:18)

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.     (Luke 11:2)

From these passages it is clear God has a purpose that stretches far into the future that guarantees the earth will continue. It is also apparent from many Bible statements that the nations of the world have a limited time to exercise their free will and when their achievements and activities threaten the very existence of the earth itself then God acts against them and thwarts their ambitions.
