What “surpasses all understanding”?  It is something which is beyond human ability to understand! We meditate on the concept of thought that Paul is unfolding to us as we read his last chapter in his letter to the Philippians.  Twice in v.4 he uses the word “rejoice” in telling them “The Lord is at hand” [v.5]

The Lord has always been “at hand” for believers, for we believe that the moment we say someone has ‘fallen asleep’ in death “in Jesus” – we then recall how Paul told the Thessalonians that “we who are alive” at his coming “will not precede those who have fallen asleep.” [1 Thess. 4 v.15]  What ‘rejoicing’ – beyond all our comprehension – will occur at that time!

In our last chapter in Philippians we read how Paul tells them to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” [v.6]

Let us have such a genuine faith that we develop to the full this wonderful lack of anxiety!  And when we achieve this, we come closer and closer to our Creator, through His Son and read and meditate on his word and then “the peace of God” says Paul, (a phrase surely based on his own experience), a “peace of (from) God, which surpasses all understanding,  will guard (y)our hearts and (y)our minds in Christ Jesus. ” [v.7]

Surely this is “the peace” Paul experienced in the jail at Philippi when he “and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” [Acts 16 v,25] before an earthquake occurred. From the perspective of those who have no relationship with God – although some may say they think there must be a Creator – it is the reality of belief which totally “surpasses all (our) understanding” to guard our hearts and minds..

May we genuinely possess this – so that it will “guard (y)our hearts” when the world is “visited by the LORD of hosts with thunder and with earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.” [Isa. 29 v.6] This is to occur around “the city where David encamped” [v.1]; it is yet to happen!

Back in Philippians we read how Paul, after his message of the “peace  of God, which surpasses all understanding” then says, “finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things … and the God of peace will be with you.” [v.8,9], what a wondrous blessing which “surpasses all(our) understanding.”
