Obedience: Are you Obedient?

Seems like a question you might ask a 5-year-old, yet in God’s eyes, obedience lies at the very heart of what faith really looks like.

Roman 6:16 emphasis what obedience is about:

[Rom 6:16 NASB] 16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

If you are a servant of sin, then you will be obedient to sin. If you are a servant of God, you will be obedient to God’s commands.

The connection to faith can be clearly seen in the life of Abraham.

[Hbr 11:8 NASB] 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Why is obedience so closely connected to faith? When we consider that “faith” is the same thing as “belief” then the connection should be much easier to understand. We act in particular ways because we believe particular things.

In 1 Samuel 15 King Saul is given a clear set of instructions to follow to defeat the nation of the Amalekites. Saul disobeys those instructions, and it is clear from the record that its because he believed that God would be satisfied with something different.

Samuel’s response makes it clear that God wants full obedience.

[1Sa 15:22 NASB] 22 Samuel said, “Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.

If we believe (have faith in) God’s words, then it is imperative that the servant of God obey the commandments that God has laid out in his word.

[Mat 22:37-39 NASB]  And [Jesus] said to him, ” ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’  This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’” ~ The Lord Jesus Christ

[Act 16:31 NASB]  They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” ~Paul and Silas

[2Ti 2:15 NASB] Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. ~ Paul

[Jhn 13:14-15 NASB] “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” ~The Lord Jesus Christ

[Mar 16:16 NASB]  “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” ~The Lord Jesus Christ

Have you been obedient?
