Theistic Evolution: On the Origin of Man

It is a common challenge for the modern Christian to unify his belief in the Bible, which describes God as the Creator of all, with the current trend in popular thinking that all living things evolved through random modification and subsequent natural selection. The commonly resulting belief is “Theistic Evolution”: an attempt to combine the Creation and Evolution theories. Theistic evolutionists believe the Bible the inspired word of God, yet also believe man’s existence on Earth to be derived from millions of years of evolution.

We consider the philosophical and theological credibility of ‘Theistic Evolution’ with particular reference to the origin and development of Man.

Argument 1: The Origin and Trend of Morality

Evolution insists humans developed from less complex animal life. (1) Therefore the initial moral state of the human species must be zero (amoral). By contrast the Bible insists the first man was created by a direct act of God, and created in a state described as ‘very good:’

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them… God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning-the sixth day. (Genesis 1:27,31)

The Bible also describes the first man as displaying positive moral attributes by tending and caring for other living things, albeit at God’s behest:

The LORD God took  the  man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work  it and take care of  it (Genesis 2:15)

This results in a natural contradiction between the two theories. Resolution of this contradiction may be possible: one could argue a species is not human until it evidences a positive moral behaviour (a wholly arbitrary distinction, but not immediately impossible). Alternatively one may argue Adam’s initial lack of discernment between good and evil does describe an amoral state (The Bible states it was only after eating the fruit that he came to know good and evil: see Genesis 3:1-24), regardless of the caring nature of his work in Eden. These are both unlikely postulates, but arguably possible.

originalsin
‘Original Sin,’ Rapp

An inviolable tenet of evolution is that all characteristics of an individual develop gradually. Any lasting developmental change to the species is argued to be so small as to be completely invisible between successive generations (2) (itself a frustrating assertion since it excludes comparison between all living life-forms from the sphere of evidence). No catastrophic discontinuities (i.e. very sudden changes in development), either positive or negative, can be accepted: they directly violate this edict. But the Bible insists that within the generation of one man, Adam: “sin entered the world” through this *one* man; and, further, that the actions of this one man had a fundamental effect on the entire species:

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned… Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come. (Romans 5:12,14)

It is impossible to reconcile these differences: at least one theory must be rejected.

The overall direction of the morality of man. Evolution claims the natural selection process refines the qualities of the species over many generations, ever tending towards properties beneficial to the species as a whole. (3) Thus the trend of morality for the human species must be heading in the upward direction, unless it is argued that morality is a disadvantageous trait per se, in which case it should never have emerged species-wide at all. But the Bible declares the reverse: that man’s moral behaviour is deteriorating:

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. (2 Timothy 3:12-13)

The contradiction between these two descriptions is insurmountable. Indeed it is a core tenet of scripture, which theistic evolution necessarily denies, that if man is to ever attain a morally perfect, or even ‘good,’ state then a reversal of his current direction must be effected from an outside agency:

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off–for all whom the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” (Acts 2:38-40)

Argument 2: The First Humans

neanderthals
Neanderthals, 1967, Frazetti

The Bible states unambiguously that there was initially one human alone (Adam) and that there was no similar helper found for him:

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. (Genesis 2:18-20)

ada
Adam and Eve, Hamjadi

Yet clearly if Adam had evolved gradually he would be surrounded by an entire species identical to him! He would have two direct parents, and potentially siblings, who had all undergone minuscule modifications for millions of years. This state of affairs would have yielded thousands, even millions, of potentially suitable helpers for him and obviated the necessity for Eve to be created.

New Testament scriptures corroborate the Genesis claim, also insisting that Adam was the first human in the genealogical line.

…the son of Kenan, the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. (Luke 3:37-38)

This statement does not leave room for an evolved genealogy, theistic or otherwise.

By the same token evolution necessitates that Eve was not the first female, for both male and female forms of the species would have been in existence for millennia. In contradiction the Bible demands that Eve was the “mother of all the living,” (the context excepts Adam from this list):

Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.  (Genesis 3:20)

This again is an insoluble contradiction: if the Bible story is true, then neither Adam nor Eve can have had similar parents or peers, or indeed any parents or peers at all. Again, either evolution or the Bible must be rejected, and the notion of theistic evolution fails entirely.

Argument 3: The First Human Death

Death
Death

A further fundamental difficulty arises for theistic evolutionists when considering the origins of human death.

In the case of mankind evolving, ‘death,’ the loss of consciousness and subsequent decay of the physical body, would have been occurring for millennia within man’s species. Indeed the ongoing repetition of the birth/death cycle is a necessary component of the evolution sequence. The Biblical stance directly refutes this notion and presents a contradictory scenario outside of the scope of any form of evolution to accept. The Bible describes a situation where Adam would not see death as long as he was obedient to the commands God gave him:

And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)

A theistic evolutionist might argue that a human death sentence associated with a certain crime does not prove human death was not occurring anyway. But the later writings of Paul clinch the matter with certainty, explaining that events in Eden really were the first occurrence of a human death in the world.

For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15:21-22)

More importantly these references teach that death was not the original state of the man: it is not the way God made him to be! This is a vital scriptural lesson, which the reader should appreciate is completely impossible to obtain alongside any form of evolutionary belief in the species of man. If evolution (however Theistic) is true, death is and always was a familiar bedfellow to the human race and not the result of any violation of an initial beauty and a greater plan.

 Conclusions

The general populace accept the veracity of evolution unchallenged and thus a religious individual may well attempt to adopt some form of evolutionary belief to gain respect within that populace. Yet the general populace is largely scientifically ignorant, and so, ironically, can only explain the rationale of evolutionary theory by faith and hearsay. The ‘preaching’ of evolution in this way is doubly ironic, since it mirrors well the behaviour of religious fanatics of yesteryear, who compelled acceptance of religious dogma throughout the general population. (4)

Overall it is shown beyond a reasonable doubt that the Biblical descriptions of human history fundamentally contradict the necessary core teachings of evolution. However much the Bible account is defocused from fact into metaphor (itself a dubious practice), and however much the theory of evolution is deified to picture God lighting the fuse of a deliberately designed evolutionary sequence, the theories remain unmarriageable. This conclusion is not reached at the premeditated intention of the author; indeed the reverse is desirable to gain common ground amongst the widest audience. It is rather through considered assessment of the necessary consequences of evolution and the Biblical record that these ideologies are concluded mutually exclusive. This does not prove either the Bible or Evolution true or false, but it does prove that no version of ‘Theistic Evolution,’ however much it dilutes either or both contrasting theories, can be sensibly defended.

In particular, union between evolutionary progression and the Biblical record is shown to be an untenable position by consideration of the irreconcilably different histories of the origin of man, with particular regards to his state of both morality and mortality. It is not for want of either effort or intention that this marriage cannot be achieved; rather the reverse is true. It is only after, and precisely because of, detailed consideration of the stipulations and necessary philosophical and theological consequences of the available theories that one is compelled to conclude that the two accounts cannot be harmonized. If evolution is correct the Bible does not give accurate description concerning the origin of man, even in metaphoric form, and therefore cannot be the Word of God and should be rejected. Conversely, if the Bible is true, then man most certainly did not evolve, and speculation that he did can be rejected with equal confidence.

The theological implication of man existing by creation and not evolution is itself educational when considering the Biblical claim that man’s purpose is to reflect God’s image (Genesis 1:26). It implies the essence of God cannot grow from physical and chemical fusion of energy and matter, but rather can only be derived from the source (God) itself. It implies that that which truly should reflect the image of God does not have origins of chance synthesis in a warmed and electrified pool of proteins, but rather exists causally from the deliberate intention and creative power of a Sentient and Omnipotent Force.

Perhaps that does not overburden the senses after all.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:10-11)

One of the refrains we hear from those who support or accept that TE/EC can be accepted in Central Fellowship is “I am happy if you wish to continue to believe in God creating the world in six literal days – just allow me my belief that we got here by God using evolution.”But can this position be maintained Biblically? Do the Scriptures of Truth, that should be the arbiter in these discussions, allow for such a proposition that two opposing views of our God be promulgated from the same platform?

What does Scripture say?
Firstly let the Apostle Paul issue a note of caution – “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace” – 1 Corinthians 14:33. The context of the whole section in which this verse is located is the counsel of the Apostle that there should not be differing voices in the Ecclesia. We should all be speaking the same thing – to the edification of the body as a whole and not to the ‘glory’ of the individual. The Apostle’s inspired comment in verse 33 is also to be seen in the context of verses 7 to 9 which in turn are based on Numbers 10:1 – 9. “And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? For ye shall speak into the air.” Can we imagine what would have happened in the camp of Israel if there had been uncertainty as to the meaning of the trumpet sounds issued at God’s command when the children of Israel where to move camp? Imagine the disorder in a camp that accommodated many thousands tents if there had been dispute among the leaders or even just confusion among the people as to what the trumpet blasts meant.

In 1 Corinthians 1:13 the Apostle brings this principle ‘up to date’ in an ecclesial context by asking “Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?” The breadth of issues covered by this need for unity of message is seen in Ephesians 4:3 – 6: “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
The need for consistency of teaching and living the Truth can be gauged from the strength of the words of our Lord in Revelation 3:15 – 16: “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” The Lord is just as blunt in Luke 11:23: “He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.”

The lack of a middle ground in the preaching of the Gospel (i.e. the concept of teaching differing ideas from the same platform) can be seen in parable after parable that come from our Lord. The Parable of the ‘Two Ways’ in Matthew 7:13 – 14 and Luke 13:23 – 24 shows that it is not possible to walk two paths at the same time. Matthew 7:24 – 27 shows the folly of trying to build on contradictory foundations. There are only wise and unwise virgins in the Lord’s estimation. There is no middle ground in the preaching of the Gospel message by our Lord.
The Apostle James brings to bear the same principles in his third chapter: “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.” (verse 8 to 12)
Thus the incompatibility of Creation and Evolution means that we cannot teach both from a Christadelphian platform. We cannot have an ecclesia that claims to uphold the Word of God as its foundation teaching contradictory messages. It is foolishness indeed to think that the ecclesia can accommodate such a divergence of views whereby some brothers and sisters believe that Adam and Eve are the progenitors of the entire human race whilst others believe that our predecessors have been here for countless generations longer than portrayed in the Biblical genealogies and that consequently many of our fellow inhabitants of this planet have no relationship to Adam and Eve at all. In this context we do well to take note of the sound warning of the Apostle Paul (on a different topic) in 1 Corinthians 14:23 – “If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?”

Let us be wise and realise that we should all be preaching the same message. Yes, as demonstrated by God Himself in Scripture, the method of the delivery of the message can change to suit the circumstances but the principles of the message do not change – EVER. Consider James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

If we all speak the same thing we will be able to “with joy … draw water out of the wells of salvation.” – Isaiah 12:3 to the praise and glory of our Creator.

Daniel 6 – A Foreshadowing of Christ

Daniel 6  –  from Today’s Daily Readings     http://www.dailyreadings.org.uk/default.asp?act=monthdisplay&m=10

Daniel 6

1 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;

2 And over these three Presidents; of whom DANIEL was FIRST: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.

daniel-before-darius-1

Just after the fall of the Babylonian Empire in 539BC , this new kingdom was established for a time by Darius, ruler of the Medo-Persian Empire.  This is a great chapter to illustrate this is actually a “TYPE” of the Kingdom of God and Daniel is a “TYPE” of Jesus Christ.

3 Then this DANIEL was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king (“type” of God) THOUGHT TO SET HIM OVER THE WHOLE KINGDOM.

4 Then the presidents and princes (in the same spirit of the jews in Jesus day)  sought to find occasion AGAINST DANIEL  concerning The Kingdom; but THEY COULD FIND NO OCCASION NOR FAULT; forasmuch as DANIEL WAS FAITHFUL,  NEITHER WAS THERE ANY ERROR or FAULT FOUND IN HIM.

(All men have sinned, except Christ, but Daniel is portrayed as a “type” of Messiah)

{Compare JOHN 18:38, 19:4,6})

5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this DANIEL, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

These adversaries of Daniel sought to use his Faithfulness of his worship and adhering to the Law of his God against him , by using the law of the land.  Much in the same way the religious leaders did in Jesus’ day.  These adversaries of Daniel plead to the king to establish a royal statue that any who pray to any other god, for 30 days, would be cast into the den of lions. (Dan.6:6-9).

For 30 days the people could only pray to the king…

{Compare JOHN 19:12, 15 “we have no king but Cesar”}.

So Darius signed the Royal Statute that cannot be changed (Dan.6:9).

daniel-darius-signing-royal-statute

Daniel still prayed (toward Jerusalem) every day to his God as he did before and when the adversaries found Daniel praying they reported this to the king (Dan.6:10-13).

daniel-praying-bed

The laws of the Medes and Persians cannot be altered, like God’s Word (Isaiah 55:11).

14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and SET HIS HEART ON DANIEL TO DELIVER HIM: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

This is like Pontius Pilate who tried to deliver Jesus from crucifixion  {JOHN 18:39, 19:6,10}

Also it was just before the sun went down when Jesus died on the cross  {JOHN 19:31-33)

The king signed this statute , not to be changed like {JOHN 19:22}

But also the king was like God, who also ordained a law that cannot be altered, that the wages of sin is death, established in the garden (Gen.2:17).

Daniel, though he was without blame of fault, was to suffer this result.

16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the DEN of lions.

Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, THY GOD whom thou servest continually, HE will deliver thee.

Daniel must have made a great impression on the king for him to trust Daniel’s God also!

This word “den” literally means “PIT”.  This pit equaled DEATH,  just as God delivered Jesus from death.

17 And a STONE was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den…

Just like they rolled a STONE on Jesus’ tomb  {MATT.27:60,66}

jesus-empty-tomb-stone-half-way-rolled-over

19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

{like  JOHN 20:1)

Then the king cried out to Daniel to see if God delivered him.  And Daniel said…

22 My God hath sent his angel (like Christ Ps.91:11), and hath shut the lions’ mouths (like Christ Ps.22:21), that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him INNOCENCY was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

daniel-in-den-of-tame-lions

23 Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den (like the grave). So Daniel was TAKEN UP out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, BECAUSE HE BELIEVED IN HIS GOD.

24 And the king commanded, and they brought THOSE MEN which had accused Daniel, and they cast THEM into the den of lions, them, THEIR children, and THEIR wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.

So why cast in the children and wives also?

Because these represent and point forward to the FUTURE destruction of the “seed of the serpent” (Genesis 3:15).  When the Lord Jesus Christ, after subduing all the nations, AT THE END OF THE 1000 YEAR MILLENIEL REIGN, WILL BE FULLY ACCOMPLISHED.  After the Second Resurrection (Rev.20:2-6) when there will be NO MORE MORTALS LEFT ON EARTH  and …

YAHWEH WILL BE ALL IN ALL

shekinah-whole-earth-glory

~1 Corinthians 15:28

But First Yahweh’s son must Reign as The King

Daniel 6

25  King Darius wrote unto all People, Nations, and Languages, that dwell in all the earth; PEACE be multiplied unto you.

26 I make a decree, That in Every Dominion of My Kingdom men tremble and fear before THE GOD OF DANIEL: for HE is the Living God, and stedfast for ever, and HIS KINGDOM WHICH SHALL NOT BE DESTROYED, and HIS DOMINION shall be even unto the end.

27 He delivereth and rescueth, and HE worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, Who hath delivered DANIEL from the power of the lions.

28 So this DANIEL prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Reasons to be thankful to be a Christadelphian

The Issue:

Sometimes we think our life is restrictive , our religion is so different and our lives so dull. It is easy to overlook the blessing we have in God’s Truth.

Answer:

Consider these facts:

Our doctrines have been challenged , scorned and insulted for 150 years and have been proclaimed as heresy.

Now we find that the leading theologians are admitting that the Bible:

  • Does not teach that God is 3 persons in one
  • Does not really teach the immortal soul theory, as this doesn’t fit with the clearly stated resurrection
  • That Hell , Limbo and purgatory(as portrayed by the church for centuries) do not actually exist
  • That eternal fiends like Satan and demons do not actually exist

SOCIAL HISTORY AND RESEARCH NOW SHOWS:

  • That children are best raised in stable families
  • That divorce and remarriage are socially and economically crippling to society.
  • That defacto relationships before marriage are a reliable predictor of divorce and abuse
  • That the sexualised media is harmful to young people
  • That sexual abstinence and discipline are best practice to avoid STD’s, pregnancy and to secure lasting marriages
  • That TV and computer use is harmful to children and should be limited
  • That the best life outcomes result from a life of self-discipline and delayed gratification, rather than self indulgence and pleasure seeking
  • That religious people enjoy many benefits from their life style- health/ peace/social contact/purpose /hope/ and avoidance of poverty traps like gambling, drugs , smoking and alcohol.
  • That true satisfaction and fulfilment is found in a commitment to serve others , rather than the selfish pursuit of happiness.

WE ARE THANKFUL TO GOD THAT WE HAVE :

  • A rational faith that does not conflict with scientific discovery, as we are constantly discovering more and more confirmation of intelligent design.
  • A faith that makes sense, giving reasons why we are here and why such a beautiful world exists (Evolution can only offer guesses HOW it came to be –it has no idea why)
  • A belief in a Creator that is constantly being affirmed by new discoveries (DNA/Hubble)
  • A hope of living for ever ..more than just a few short uncertain years of mortality
  • The prospect of knowing Christ and God and the angels ..and of being part of their future joys.
  • Wonderful friends with common godly values all around the world
  • An amazing fellowship based on a common faith and trust.
  • So many real caring friends compared to most people in the world
  • People who care enough to support you in the most distressing times.
  • The opportunity to find a life partner , who has common friends, shared history and experiences and common aspirations and values.
  • An understanding of where the world is going /and what is coming. No need for fear of the future (climate change/economic collapse/unemployment/Nuclear war/ Armageddon)

SO LET US VALUE OUR HERITAGE OF THE TRUTH WE HAVE RECEIVED

Worth thinking about:

Athiests say that there is no existence or consciousness after death and no future resurrection. If they are right we have nothing to fear as we will never know about it.

However if we are right about the resurrection we will be ecstatically happy , and if they are there they will be very miserable indeed.

Can we fellowship with other christian churches?

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them… By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” Rom 16:17-18 ESV

faith fellowship.pngThe Christian entertainment industry has become extremely influential and all pervading in recent years. The marketing is highly sophisticated and appealing, and particularly aimed at young people. This approach to worship is now becoming widely accepted. These large entertaining churches have had such a powerful influence that some Christadelphian events are now being modelled on this style of worship. The increased focus on an entertainment style of religion is now replacing the power of God’s Word as the motivator in people’s lives. Christian rock bands have created a new culture in themselves. As a result, it is becoming more common for Christadelphians to attend other churches for worship. This may involve playing in, or being entertained by bands at Christian “worship” festivals and conferences. Past experience reveals that this has been devastating on the faith of many.

Scripture is clear that fellowship with unbelievers is inconsistent with the hope of the gospel (Isa 8:20; 30:9-10; 2 Cor 6:14-18; Eph 4:14; 5:11-12; 1 John 1:1-7; 2 John 7; 2 Thess 3:6). The first century believers “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship” (Acts 2:42). Only with “one mind’ can we “strive together for the faith of the gospel” (Phil 1:27). We also are warned in many New Testament passages of the deceptiveness of false Christianity and those who seek to draw others away. A falling away from the Truth in the first century was warned of passionately by the apostles and was a source of grief for them (Acts 20:29-32; 2 Thess 2:1-12: 2 Pet 2:3; Jude 3-4). The apostles wrote so we might understand and identify the dangers. We are also exhorted to respond for the saving of fellow believers and young people. Grave warnings are given by the apostles about those within our community who lead others astray. What more damaging way to do this than to invite, accompany and encourage believers to attend false places of worship?

The following article was written by the late Brother Harry Tennant in the Christadelphian Magazine in October 1984. It’s message is one which is still just as relevant today as when he wrote it.

A TIME TO BE HONEST

No one who moves around the ecclesial world, either in Britain or anywhere else, can have failed to observe or hear about a practice among a not insignificant number of brethren and sisters which creates a division of loyalty between our own community and other places of worship.

The division makes itself known amongst those who regularly attend both a Christadelphian meeting, usually the Breaking of Bread, and some other place of worship – Baptist or evangelical, for example — or some convention or campaign arranged by or supported by groups of churches. Ecclesias become aware that this kind of thing is happening and are perplexed as to what, if anything, they can do. Those who engage in activities of this kind may consider that they are exercising a freedom to which they have a natural right, and do so because they believe it is to their spiritual well being. Perhaps they are convinced that the Christadelphian community is not providing the type of worship or the spiritual stimulus which they believe to be useful, and that the only way to make up the lack is to find it elsewhere.

Facing the Issues

The purpose of this article is to ask all concerned, ecclesias and individuals alike, to face up to the issues involved. A “witchhunt” is not being advocated. The approach now being suggested is at an entirely different level. It is self examination which is required, not simply the pointing of accusing fingers in the direction of other brethren and sisters. If we fail to meet this challenge, we shall suffer considerable spiritual damage and, perhaps, disaster.

The issues are central and not marginal. They lie at the very heart of everything which all of us confess to hold dear. They concern the Lord our God, His Son the Lord Jesus Christ and the atonement by which we are cleansed from our sins.

It is doubtful whether there is a single case in which a brother or sister has begun to attend regularly another place of worship in addition to worship within the ecclesias where changes in attitude in respect of doctrine and fellowship have not taken place.

Sooner or later these changes in attitude become changes in conviction about the rightness of or the necessity for the doctrines which Christadelphians hold. These doctrines are the very foundation stones upon which our community exists. Experience has shown that the following “new” doctrines are accepted, tolerated or suggested in whole or in part (and there are others, too):

1 . The eternal Sonship of Christ, whether or not this is stated in a trinitarian form;
2. The personality of the Holy Spirit as distinct from the person of the Lord God and of His Son;
3. The substitutionary death of the Lord Jesus Christ;
4. A “power of darkness”, usually bordering on if not entirely accepting the orthodox doctrine of Satan and the Devil; In some cases, there is a belief in demons as the personal agents of a personal Satan;
5. Conscious survival of death. This is often stated in very vague terms.

All of us will admit that these are fundamental and serious matters. It is not possible to be a Christadelphian and hold these beliefs. It is not possible to be a Christadelphian and to doubt the corresponding Christadelphian doctrines to those listed above.

Furthermore, it is not possible to be a true evangelical and not believe in (at least) doctrines 1 and 3 above.

No Toleration

It is not that other communities are prepared to tolerate Christadelphians in their midst if the Christadelphian insists on stating repeatedly what Christadelphians believe about Christ. Dr. Billy Graham writes: “. . . those who desert the truth of Christ for some ‘disloyal deviationist’ speculation — whether Gnostic, Mormon, ‘Witnesses’, Christadelphian, ‘Christian Scientist’, Spiritualist or another …”

Christadelphian teaching about God and the Lord Jesus Christ is not acceptable to evangelicals and the like; indeed, some of them openly declare that Christadelphianism is the work of demons.

The point of this article is not to argue the truth of Christadelphian doctrines — that is done thoroughly elsewhere; in any case we all profess to accept and to believe them — but rather to show the ultimate impossibility of trying to have a foot in both camps. It cannot be done without serious distortion of one’s own Christadelphian faith and, correspondingly, without being out of step with one’s brethren and sisters.

It is this inevitable conflict of faith and of fellowship which all of us have to face up to. It is not a question of “doing nothing” since those who are regularly visiting other places are, in fact, “doing something”.

Ecclesias should be aware that it is a neglect of pastoral responsibility to the persons concerned and to the rest of us simply to allow the situation to ride. There is no doubt that doing nothing is itself a form of compromise and, in the experience of other ecclesias, sows seeds for greater troubles to come. The sooner those who are affected are engaged in quiet, sympathetic and unhurried discussions, whilst firmly maintaining the truth we believe, the better it will be for all concerned. Failure to do so means that in the long run the ecclesia is willing to compromise the faith to which all of us have given allegiance in Christ. Down that road lies disaster to someone’s faith.

A Natural Reluctance

There is a natural reluctance to take the initiative in such matters. All of us are in need of help before God and we are not anxious to call in question the faith of others. It must be remembered, however, that the first initiative comes from those who decide to worship elsewhere whilst continuing to attend our meetings. If it be pleaded that those who do these things are “harmless” to the rest of us, it must be stated that this cannot be the case. The minimum harm is that support has been withdrawn from some of our meetings. But experience indicates that the prayers, talks, manner of presiding and almost everything else is sooner or later affected by the “other” worship. Reason dictates that this must be so.

Either we believe that the faith we confessed at baptism and have sought to live out in our lives is true to Scripture and to God, or we do not. For those of us who do so believe, and all of us should in honesty do so, surrender or compromise will be disastrous to our faith. The meaning would have gone out of life. What kind of guidance would we be giving to our children and young people? Moreover, what kind of guidance is being given within the ecclesia by those who also seek regularly to worship elsewhere?

These are plain questions and they must be answered from hearts and consciences before God in the light of Scripture.

We plead with those who are at present walking the double path to face up honestly to what they are doing. This is a plea for openness before God and it is not castigation or heartlessness. Worship in other places always involves some kind of fellowship, and fellowship, whether we intend it or not, always involves basic doctrines. It is this issue which has to be examined and it is this challenge which has to be met.

A Straightforward Answer Needed

We would ask those who are so engaged to answer in their hearts before God the following simple question:

Am I honestly being a Christadelphian in the things I wholeheartedly believe and in the fellowship I am practicing?

It is our conviction that if we say yes to that question we will cease to attend elsewhere. If we cannot answer yes it is time to talk honestly to someone in the ecclesia, preferably to one of the arranging brethren, in order to resolve the matter; it is to be hoped, to come back to a firm hold of the faith we once confessed.

If ecclesias know that they are affected with this problem and have hitherto done nothing about it, may we plead that they make known exactly where the ecclesia stands in respect of our basic doctrines and why, and urge those who may have been allowed to worship elsewhere without comment to declare their own affirmation of our basis of belief and our life and our practice of fellowship.

It is a fact to be reckoned with that ecclesias which have failed to rise to their responsibility before Christ have suffered considerably in their spiritual lives and in some cases have finally been rent asunder or almost completely ceased to exist. On the other hand, those who have seen it right to reaffirm their conviction in the rightness and practice of our faith have grown stronger as a result. The evidence is available in the ecclesial world around us without any need for inquisitorial investigation. The truth we hold is glorious and saving: it works wondrous changes in our lives and is profitable both now and for ever.

It is sometimes pleaded in mitigation by those who worship elsewhere that their ecclesia is “stale”, “uninteresting”, and “unhelpful”. There may or may not be truth in such statements. Arranging brethren should look to the life in Christ of the whole ecclesia and see what can be done to effect improvement. Are the basic doctrines being taught in Sunday School? Are we sure about that? Is the Youth Group imaginatively run, with good activities and a proper spiritual content? Is the Bible Class program helpful and designed to support the faith and life we live? Are our Sunday speakers serving us well? Are we ensuring that sound and strengthening exhortation is being given? Are the evening and other occasions of witness strong and appealing in their message?

There are many sources of help in our spiritual life and these have always come down to three or four simple things:

• Constant and prayerful reading of the Scriptures;
• Constant and constructive attendance at all our meetings;
• Constant and earnest prayer in Christ to our heavenly Father.

If these things are practiced in our homes and in our ecclesias there will be a living fire ever burning on the ecclesial hearth, and far less temptation for some to seek to warm themselves elsewhere.

What are the books of The Apocryha, and should we take notice of them?

What are the books of The Apocryha, and should we take notice of them?

In some Bibles there are extra books included that appear similar to parts of the scriptures .Are these God’s inspired words or human writings?

Answer
• “Apocrypha “ is a Latin word meaning “obscure or hidden away “.
• This name has been given to these extra books that are found in some old Bibles (especially Catholic Bibles) and yet are not in most Protestant Bibles.
• The title “Apocrypha” has become to be understood as “the books not included because they are spurious or suspect. ”
• The Books in question include – 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch , 1Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, The prayer of Manasseh, additions to Daniel (the song of the Three Children, Susanna and Bel and the Dragon) and additions to Esther .
• They are called “The Apocrypha” because they are not included in most Bibles- being regarded as NOT inspired by God.
• They were writings by Jews written (200-100BC)before the New Testament, but long after the last prophets of God wrote.
• They were included in compilations of some versions of the Septuagint Translations ,( as we might include maps , dictionaries , charts or notes) . Their only claim to authenticity today is the fact that they were found alongside Septuagint texts.
• They have never been regarded as God’s revealed scriptures by Jews.
• None were ever written in Hebrew originally as were all the books of the Old Testament.
• Nowhere in any of the books is a claim made that God inspired them.
• In fact the books of the Apocrypha refer to the fact that God had ceased to inspire prophets . (1Macc 4:46 , 1Macc 9:27, 1Macc 14:41)
• Their authenticity was rejected by Josephus and also by the Manual of Discipline in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
• They were first mistakenly given status as scripture by Greek speaking Christians.(around 400AD)
• They were finally declared to be part of scripture by the Catholic Church in 1545-1563AD .
• Some early Church writers quoted from them…but only as we might quote from Shakespeare or as Paul quoted Greek poetry.
• The claim that Solomon (Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus) and Baruch wrote the books attributed to them is widely accepted as false.
• These books contain factual errors…(in Judith Nebuchadnezzar is called the “King of Assyria, in Nineveh ”) .
• In the books of Maccabees Antiochus is said to die 3 different deaths in 3 different places .
• Books like Tobit and Judith are clearly fictional. One story is about Raphael fighting a demon with the organs of a fish.
• None of them even attempt any future predictions, as all other prophets do.
• Jesus and the apostles completely ignored them, and they are NEVER quoted into the New Testament. This is the most convincing reason to disregard them.
• Catholics protest that Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon are not quoted in the New Testament either, but are accepted as scripture . However all these books are recognised by all scholars as part of the Jewish collection of scripture.
• The main reason the Catholic Church has supported their inclusion that they contain unscriptural doctrines that the Church favours, such as purgatory, sinless perfection and the treasury of merit. .
• Wrong doctrines found in the Apocrypha also include praying for the dead (2Macc 12:45-46) . See what the bible says in Luke 16:25-26 and Heb 9:27.
• In Judith 9v10-13 God is attributed supporting lies.
• The books of the Apocrypha teach immoral practices such as lying, suicide, assassination and magic incantations.
• The book Ecclesiasticus contains Jewish societal views that demean women and were not what God has said. “It is a disgrace to be the father of an undisciplined, and the birth of a daughter is a loss” Ecc 22:3. and this in Ecc 25:24 “From a woman sin had its beginning. Because of her we all die .”. see also Ecc 25:19 .
• The book of Tobit (1:3-5, 14:11) says Tobit was alive at the time of Jeroboam’s revolt (931BC) and was still alive at the time of the Assyrian captivity (722BC) , yet he only lived 158 years.
So we conclude that the Apocrypha should be ignored, other than an interesting collection of Jewish stories. These books are NOT scripture. See ISA 8:20.

Who did Cain marry, and who was he afraid of?

Who did Cain marry, and who was he afraid of?

In Genesis 4:14-17, we see Cain in fear of retribution, marrying his wife and beginning to set up a city. Who did he marry and of whom was he afraid? Some theistic evolutionists suggest that Cain married a member of an evolved human race. Bible scholars suggest Cain married his sister or niece. Would this be a problem genetically as later these sort of relationships were banned?

Answer
The Bible only names 3 of Adam and Eves children (Cain , Abel and Seth), but Gen 5v4 says they had many sons and daughters. When Seth was born, after Abel’s murder, Adam was 130 years of age and probably had many other children besides Cain and Abel.
Other facts that need to be noted are :-
• The Bible clearly says Adam was the first man on earth (1 Cor 15:45-47)
• No other human was found as company for Adam (Gen 2:20)
• Eve was called the “mother of all living” (Gen 3:20)
• God says all people living on earth came from a one man (Acts 17:26)
• Adam lived 930 years and probably had many children.
• Death was rare so the population increased very rapidly. Estimated 2 billion by the Flood.
• Even a conservative estimate has the earth’s population at several million by Cain’s death.
• Cain was possibly already married when he lived in Eden (Gen 4:17)
• So Cain and his brothers had to have married sisters or nieces.
• Cain was concerned that his relatives would try to avenge the death of Abel.
• The Bible does not tell us over how many years Cain and his children built their cities (settlements), it could have taken hundreds of years .
• The land of Nod was probably the name used in the time of Moses for the place Cain had migrated to.

What about the biological issue? Marrying close relatives can cause deformities , and almost all human societies forbid it.

Answer
• Hereditary traits , and sometimes defects , are passed on by parents DNA to their children
• Genetic instructions work in pairs , one from each parent.
• As generations go by, copying errors do occur and can lead to disabilities.
• Generally the defective gene from one parent is overruled by the correct gene in the other parent.
• Over many generations defects in DNA accumulate in the population
• If close relatives procreate the chances of both parents contributing the same defective genes increases and serious defects can occur.
• But as Cain and his sisters (or nieces) were very close to the originally “ very good” condition of Adam, there was very little accumulated defective DNA in these years
• Abraham married his half sister, without problem.
• Only by the time of the law of Moses (2000years later), did God now ban close relatives from marrying. By now it was a real issue of concern.
• God banned incest on moral grounds as well as genetic reasons (Lev 20:11)

Why did God order the genocide of the Canaanites and the Amalekites?

Follow........
Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedinrssyoutubevimeotumblrinstagramFacebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedinrssyoutubevimeotumblrinstagram

Why did God order the genocide of the Canaanites and the Amalekites?

Many people who are rightly appalled at genocide practiced by men like Hitler, Pol Pot and Stalin have applied the same standard to God . In the Bible, the destruction or genocide of wicked nations is clearly taught, sometimes God did this (Assyria and Babylon) and on other times he required his people Israel to undertake it.

Answer
• God who created mankind can do as He wishes with the earth and man.Romans 9:20-23
• Man has no right to question God’s decisions. Dan2:34-35
• God generally says we are not to kill, or even hate, but he did order Israel to exterminate certain nations completely.
• When God took the Jews out of Egypt to make them his chosen nation, he gave them the land of Canaan. This involved removing the Canaanite peoples who lived there.Gen 15:14-21
• The reason for this genocide was their totally debased and evil practices of religion, involving gross immorality, worship of genitalia and the sacrificing of children to idols.
• These practices and false gods were so entrenched in the minds of these nations that to leave any of them alive would be highly dangerous to the Jews who would now take over and live in their land. Deut 7:1-6
• The failure of Israel to accomplish this extermination had just that result, with Canaanite religions overtaking many of the Jewish people.
• The Amalekites were a cruel and deceitful race that God specifically hated and wanted destroyed. Exod 17:14-16, 1Sam 15:1-3

So while modern humanistic thinking will very likely reject a God that orders genocide, that will not change God and His purpose.

How did all the animals fit into the ark, and how were they distributed over the planet after the Flood of Noah’s day? Christadelphian Answers

How did all the animals fit into the ark, and how were they distributed over the planet after the Flood of Noah’s day?

People who doubt the veracity of Bible records sometimes cast doubt on the record of the flood.

Answer

  • The dimensions of the ark are given to us in the Bible. Using the standard cubit of 17.5 inches the ark was 438 feet long, 73 feet wide and 43.8 feet high.
  • The ark had 3 decks (Gen 6v16) so the total deck area was approximately 95,700 square feet, and the total volume 1,396,000 cubic feet.
  • The gross tonnage was approximately 13,960 tons, which is comparable to some large modern day vessels.
  • Translated to standard railroad stock cars , that would each carry 240 sheep , there would be 522 rail cars in volume.
  • The total number of sheep in a ship that size could have been 125,000.
  • It is estimated that the average size of all the species would be much less than a sheep. There are not more than 100 animals that are bigger.
  • We are also told in Gen 6v14 that there were rooms(pens) for the animals , plus food and there must have been living space for the humans on board.
  • It has been estimated that there were 17,600 species of mammals , birds, reptiles and amphibians that would need to be in the ark. this gives us 35,200 animals
  • Working on two of each species , with 5 extra each of clean animals (say 20% of species to be generous ) we add back 17,600 …so now we have a maximum of animals totalling about 53,000 sheep equivalents.
  • So less than 50%of the available space would be needed for animals leaving plenty of space for food and humans.
  • It is also likely that younger, and therefore smaller, animals were selected (and delivered) by God to Noah.
  • Inside the ark were sufficient of each species to create the diverse gene pool we see today.
  • The Bible clearly states that the animals were brought by God to Noah, and after the flood, we can only assume that God redistributed them as he saw fit, and to wherever he chose, even if this was overseas.

So we can see that there is no case to doubt the Genesis account on the basis of the size of the ark.

However we must still believe that God did the things recorded. 2Pet 3:3-7

Introducing the Christadelphians – Who, Why, What, Where?

Walking down the streets of your town, you may have noticed a hall with “CHRISTADELPHIANS” on the sign outside. Who, you may wonder, are these people, and what do they stand for?
Christadelphians are found in most countries of the world. We believe the Bible is God’s handbook for life, and read it daily for comfort and advice. We model our beliefs and practices as closely as
we can on the first century church, which makes us different to most other Christian groups. For example, we have no paid priests or pastors, because there were none in the time of the apostles. We do not feel bound to tithe our income, or keep Sabbaths, or burn incense, because these practices were left behind with the Law of Moses, and not repeated in the New Testament. We call each other ‘brother’ or ‘sister’.

We practise only adult baptism.
Like the early Christians, we expect Jesus to return from heaven to be a king on the earth, bringing justice and peace.

As this could be any time, we try to live as pilgrims, ready to leave and be with him. If we die, we hope to be raised back to life when Jesus comes. We believe the Jews are still God’s people, and will be restored to him. And we follow these simple rules – love God, love each other, love your neighbours, and remember Jesus in bread and wine. Bible Truth & Prophecy is a remarkable on-line tool for establishing just how far removed from the teachings of the Bible mainstream Christian teaching has become.

End Time Prophecies are interpreted using the Bible, not man made ideas or notions.
Key Biblical subjects such as the Trinity, Devil/Satan worship, Holy Spirit Gifts & much more are all dealt with extensively from the Bible’s viewpoint and not man’s.We will demonstrate how Christian beliefs have become corrupted, and reveal the ‘Truth’ as taught by the 1st Century Apostles.
